Dongshapo Fm
Type Locality and Naming
The type section is located at the Dongshapo village (E112°20′, N34°38′), Sunqitun town, about 5 km southwest of Luoyang City, Henan Province (BGMRH(Henan)P, 1997). Its name is derived from the “Dongshapo Bed” used by Liu and Li (1963). Zheng et al. (1999) quoted as the Dongshapo Fm.
Synonyms: Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources of Henan Province (BGMRH(Henan)P) (1989, 1997) twice treated the Dongshapo Bed as a synonym of the Luoyang Fm, and proposed abandoning the former. However, Zheng et al. (1999) still used the Dongshapo Fm. Gao et al. (2014a) considered that the Dongshapo Fm is a synonym of the Luoyang Fm.
Lithology and Thickness
It comprises three parts: Lower part is formed by grey, yellowish-brown, and motley conglomerates, gravels, calcareous muddy sandstones, and silty mudstones with lamellar marlstones. Middle part consists of brownish-red and orange sandy claystones, muddy sandstones with lamellar marlstones and lenses of gravels. Upper part is characterized by brownish-red sandy claystones or mudstones with gravels; It contains fossil mammals. Its thickness is in range of 30~500 m.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
In the type section, no underlying rock could be seen. Regionally, the next older unit is the Jiyaun Gr (Yuzhuang Fm).
Upper contact
In the type section, the Dongshapo Fm unconformably is overlain by middle Pleistocene light brownish-red subclay.
Regional extent
In other regions, this formation is in unconformable contact with the underlying Shitaijie Fm or Mangchuan Fm, and conformably or disconformably contacts with the overlain Luwanfen Fm or the Daan Fm (=Daying Fm) basalts. The formation is mainly distributed to the basins of Luoyang, Yichuan, and Jiyuan, Henan Province.
